Melanie Atkinson, Assistant

Ever since the third grade I knew I wanted to go to Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) and work with animals. I have since graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science. I have one cat named Sawyer, and if I am not at work, you'll most likely find me on top of the mountain, tearin' it up on my snowboard.

I was born with a love for animals. I started riding horses at age three and currently enjoy working with my twelve year old American Quarter Horse, Oscar, whom I rescued several years ago. I have two other pets, Java, an Australian Kelpie, and Pippin, a six year old Manx. I have been a veterinary assistant for more than twenty years, and love helping people and their pets.

I am a native San Franciscan, and I love to spend my time off in the city by the bay. I have a variety of kids and pets of various ages and species. I have a daughter and three sons, three dogs, two cats, many fish, a hamster, and the newest addition, a leopard gecko.

I have been working as a veterinary assistant for over thirteen years. I recently graduated from Dominican University and share my home with four cats, three dogs, and two frogs.

In my seminary years fellow students nicknamed me "St Francis," as I would be seen many times talking to the deer, raccoons, and birds on campus. Given my busy schedule, I have no animals of my own. However, I am blessed to care for all of our boarders here at CMCEH. I treat each of them as if they were my own pet. I play guitar at church, lead bible study and do full time ministry.

I have been raised around animals all my life and am the proud owner of two chinchillas, Isis and Hermy, and two cats, Dolly and Pumpkin. I have a great love of big dogs. No animal is unwelcome at my house!

I have worked with animals for the past 15 years, and have a love for horses. I currently have a few pets at home...ok, a menagerie. I have three cats, Bailey, Jasmine, and Charlie, a German Shepherd Dog named Gretta, a parakeet named Sprockett, a hamster, Teddy, and finally, a Crested Gecko named Pele.

I have been working in the veterinary field since I was sixteen. Needless to say, animals, especially exotic animals, are my passion. I have a dog, McCoy, a cat, Madison, a Bearded Dragon, Boris Barbie, 2 Sulcata Tortoises, Squirt and Dude Crush, a Cuban Rock Iguana, Daisy, and finally a four year old (human) daughter, Alicia.

Pats on the Back

A big thank you to the staff and the doctors at Central Marin Cat & Exotic Hospital for taking such good care of my aging "kidney kitty", Maxi. She is well taken care of when she comes to board and I love that every time I call about anything the staff asks me how my kitty is doing. Everyone there is so caring and real!

Timely Tidbits

April 25, 2010
First "National Pet Parents Day"
Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) has designated the last Sunday in April — this year, April 25 — as National Pet Parent's Day, slating the nation’s first official day celebrating pet caregivers! In the traditional spirit of a spring season set aside for celebrating parents of human children, National Pet Parent's Day recognizes and honors those who lovingly consider pets part of their family. What a great way to celebrate by making sure your pet has the Heath Insurance coverage they need for wellness care, dental care and any health emergency that might arise!

May 4-10, 2010 is National Pet Week!
